  1. And my memory is failing – I thought I’d got three credits, but it was only two. All journalism/theory units are distinction or better, while the two credits are PR units.

Ah well. That was then, this is now.

  2. A couple of weeks ago, I sent the following to the humanities email address that Curtin give on their site for enquiring about post-grad stuff.

I did email a month ago, so I’ll try again. Maybe I was too vague, but
it’s going to happen again :-)

I’m a former student (student number) who graduated in 2000 with a BA Mass
Communications (with distinction). I started honours in 2001 but had
to quit due to Chronic Fatigue.

Since then, I’ve been the WA-based writer for the AFL, Cricket
Australia, and National Basketball websites, been a sports journo for
Ch10, along with various freelance stuff and AAP. I’ve also worked at
the WACA in a Communications/PR role, and been the media manager for
    the Perth Wildcats.

I’m really interested in doing something more, but not sure what. I’m
quite interested in how the Web is changing things from a publishing
news point-of-view, (given my work history, I guess that’s not
surprising), but I’m also (more) interested in the changing way we
communicate, as in SMS, IMs, etc.

Would I be able to talk to someone about what I could possibly do? I’d
    appreciate it.

Well, I figured it’d take them a while to get back to me, and so it proved. (It’s a little busy at unis right now, funnily enough.)

But today, Associate Professor of Internet Studies Matthew Allen from Curtin’s Division of
Humanities rang me. I dealt with Matthew when I was starting my honours back in 2001, and he was terrific then, as he was today.

It seems that they’d be most happy to have me back to do either my Honours, or Masters. I explained that it was a combination of CFS and being fed-up with the course that made me quit last time, and received assurances that it’s no longer a situation where we’re guinea-pigs :-)

I think my cv might be more impressive than real-life :-) Anyway, I told Matthew that I was undecided as to what to do, but it quickly became apparent during our conversation that I really should be doing my honours rather than a course-work Masters: “In view of your extensive real-world experience, a more academic path would seem far more suitable” (or similar).

The Masters seems to be pretty much an end in itself, where as: “A first-class honours degree should get you a PhD placement, and probably a scholarship, at any University in the country”.

Honestly, I was most worried that my ideas were rubbish, but I was assured that both were very valid and we’d have no trouble at all getting a proposal and project out for either of them. Now I have to decide which one to do…

It looks like I should be able to start (part-time) in second semester without any trouble, which works nicely, as that’s most of the way through the footy season.

Sweet. Even the thought of going back, now that I know they’re interested, feels good.
